Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Traditional soft contact lenses are made from hydrogel polymers which are soft, water-containing plastics. Since the plastic is not oxygen permeable, the water performs the job of carrying oxygen through the lens to the eye. But water can carry small amounts of oxygen and greater the content of water greater is its tendency to dehydrate after long periods of wear. Silicone hydrogel contact lenses on the other hand are a modern and innovative development. They are oxygen permeable and use both their water and polymer content to transmit oxygen to the eye.

Silicone Hydrogel lenses breathe six to seven times more oxygen than other lenses and are more comfortable and convenient to wear. Since they contain less water than traditional hydrogel lenses, they aren't as prone to dehydration while you're wearing them. For some people who wear their lenses for long days, this sure is a more useful and comfortable option. Silicone hydrogels also have a 30-day contact lens wear, called "continuous wear" available in the market. The lenses are replaced monthly, preventing long-term build-up of deposits on the lens surface. Wearing 30-day contact lenses offers benefits similar to those of laser vision correction. If you regularly sleep in your lenses, silicone hydrogels can be the best choice for you. However, silicone hydrogel lenses aren't available "off the shelf" in all lens designs, diameters and curvatures.

The 30-day contact lenses option may not be suitable for everyone. Today, almost everyone can wear daytime contact lenses, but not everyone's eyes can adapt to sleeping in contacts. Further, your eyes may be suited for some overnight wear, but perhaps not for 30 consecutive nights. Get you eyes checked out form your eye-care practitioner first and evaluate the opportunities and risks of 30-day wear, extended wear in general as well as silicone hydrogel lenses for you.
